Blaze of Glory
The episode begins outside the Harbor school. Seth rehashes how great last year was, with the two couples dating,
but Ryan instructs him not to live in the past. Summer also tells Seth not to meddle with Ryan and Marissa, but by then,
the young Mr. Cohen has already started scheming. The school's spring pep rally is coming up, and Seth senses the
opportunity to get them back together. With the debut issue of Newport Living magazine in the works, Julie is visited
again by former "colleague" and current blackmailer Lance. He reiterates his demand for $500K, or else her '80s skin
flick will soon stream live on the Internets. Desperate, Julie swallows her pride and begs Sandy for help. At school,
Seth convinces Marissa to ask Ryan for help creating the bonfire for the pep rally. She asks, and the former arsonist
agrees. Summer is still upset with Seth for his plotting, while Alex is increasingly anxious with Marissa's absence.
At this point, everybody is on the move. Julie stops by Alex's apartment to convince Marissa to come home. Not
happening. At the sametime, Alex pays Seth, who inadvertently lets it slip that Ryan and Marissa spent the night
in a tent during last week's "Mallpisode." Enraged, she storms out and heads home. Sandy drops by Lance's bachelor
pad to discuss a settlement. No dice there. Ryan goes over to Alex's place for a meeting with Marissa about the bonfire,
with Captain Oats in tow - the equine stud will be used to help created a scale model of a trojan horse for the fire.
Upon arriving back at her apartment, Alex confronts Ryan on his way out the door. A beer can is thrown, and the
Chino native is shoved three times and told to stay away from Marissa. For good measure, she goes inside and confronts
Marissa as well. Back home, Ryan gives Seth a much-deserved punch in the arm. Seth's mother, meanwhile, is becoming
more and more intrigued by the freelance editor, Carter, whom she hired to work on Newport Living. After he steps down
from the project, Kirsten pays a visit to his home and leaves a copy of an old magazine he used to run at Berkeley - along
with a mysterious note. Ironically, the mag came from Sandy, a big fan back in the day. Desperate to bring her daughter
home, but aware that she has no control over her, Julie enlists Ryan to help. Once again caught in the middle, he ventures
back to Alex's and is again threatened by the beer-swilling blonde. Ryan catches up with Marissa at school, much to the
delight of viewers (and dozens of confused students constructing the bonfire's horse replica). Ryan proceeds to whip his
staff into shape and get the show on the road, stringing together a record number of complete sentences. Enlightened by
Kirsten's discovery of the old magazine, Carter agrees to come back aboard the Newport Livingteam. One gets the
impression that Kirsten is attracted to more than his editorial prowess, but we will have to wait and see. Sandy returns
to see Lance, announcing that he and Julie are prepared to buy the rights to the film for his half-million asking price.
They sign a contract, giving Julie a month to raise the cash. Just as the bonfire preparations are completed, Alex and
a pair of thuggish friends arrive to show Ryan who's boss. All parties are ready to throw down, but Marissa intervenes.
As much as she wanted it to work out between them, Marissa tells Alex, it just can't. This... this is her life (tear)! They
share a tear-filled embrace, completing the most civil breakup on O.C. history. Seth and Summer arrive to find that
his wish has come true - Ryan and Marissa are happy and full of school spirit. Smiles and witty lines are exchanged,
the fire ignites and as the horse is engulfed in flames, the screen fades to black. Captain Oats could not be reached for comment.
