No more mr cute guy
HYPE
AGE:33 HOMETOWN: Newburyport, Mass. NO MORE TEARS: For years Johnny Messner played out
the familiar storyline of bartender/struggling actor, inching his way into Hollywood via the hun niche
with bit roles like"cute podiatrist" on Tv and Selma Blair's airheaded boytoy in "The Sweetest Thing".
"It's never bad to be called a hot guy," Messner admits. But it wasn't until snagging the decidedly more
rugged role of a mohawked soldier in last year's "Tears Of The Sun" that he got out from behind the bar
for good. "I hate the sob story, but it really does happen that way. It's like, 'I've been pushed to the limit,
handled all I can take, now here's your Scooby Snack.'"
PRETTY TO GRITTY: Continuing with his tough-guy turn, this month Messner plays a Delta Force Special-Ops
instructor opposite Val Kilmer in the David Mamet thriller "Spartan". How did he solidify the typecast transition?
"I started mangling myself," the (still very hansome) actor muses. "I shaved my head and started tatting myself up."
NOT AFRAID OF SNAKES: Though Messner notes the sudden deluge of action-adventure work is "getting a
little repetitive," the brand of roughing it the roles require is right up his alley. He just wrappped his first starring
role as a scientist-cum snake wrangler in the Anaconda sequel "Anacondas" The Hunt For The Blood Orchid",
shot on location in Fiji for 11 weeks straight- at night. "It was always dark, so I was like a zombie," he says. "We
were constantly in the water- it was very physical, wet, dirty... but I love that shit!"
